Ancient Apothecary Lavender Essential Oil

For topical, aromatherapy or dietary purposes.

Dr. Axe says,  “I believe lavender essential oil can be a supporter of healthy skin, and when I get a minor scrape or struggle with skin issues, lavender oil is my go-to. I just mix a few drops with a little bit of coconut oil and rub it right onto my skin. I also, like to use it for a relaxing massage, for a calming bath, or even to diffuse it right before bed or place a drop on my pillow at night.“

Lavender essential oil is the most used essential oil in the world today, but the benefits of lavender were actually discovered over 2,500 years ago. Because of its powerful properties, lavender oil benefits abound and it’s been used both cosmetically and overall health for centuries.

Historically, the Egyptians used lavender for mummification and as a perfume. In fact, it’s said that when King Tut’s tomb was opened in 1923, there was said to be a faint scent of lavender that could still be detected after 3,000 years.

Wow!

Early and modern aromatherapy texts advocate for lavender’s use as a microbial-balancing essential oil.  The leaves and stems of the plant were used to prepare decoctions for health-supporting purposes as well as for cosmetic purposes. The Romans used lavender oil for bathing, cooking and purifying the air.

Over time it’s become obvious: With its calming properties and varied uses, lavender oil is often a must-have oil people simply don’t want to be without.

Lavender oil is a favorite addition to perfumes, soaps and candles because of its pleasant floral scent. But it’s more than just a charming smell. It also has a whole host of benefits that date back thousands of years. In fact, in the Bible, lavender oil was among the aromatics used for anointing those with health needs.

Then there’s this famous account: Do you remember the biblical story about Mary breaking a bottle of spikenard on the ground and then washing Jesus’ feet with her hair? The oil in that bottle is thought to have been lavender, chosen specifically for its elegant, soothing support. And that’s just one piece of lavender oil’s incredible history.

Another amazing story happened over 100 years ago when a French researcher named René-Maurice Gattefossé suffered a mishap that affected the skin on his arms. The incident happened quickly and he was in his lab, so he promptly put his arms in what he thought was a vat of water. Instead, and to his surprise, he soaked his arm in a vat of lavender oil and—by accident—he experienced firsthand (so to speak) the benefits lavender oil can have for the skin.  In fact, he believed his skin was greatly helped, thanks to lavender oil.
