The small, bushy holy basil shrub is native to India—an annual plant with lavender-hued flowers.

But don’t be fooled by its diminutive appearance, because it has big benefits!

In fact, holy basil can be incredibly beneficial to human health, primarily due to its fascinating composition of its essential oil, containing eugenol, camphor, flavonoids, nerol and various terpenes. This rich blend of compounds can deliver numerous health benefits.

Holy basil, also known as tulsi, (meaning “the incomparable one”) has been historically used in Ayurveda as an “adaptogen” to help counterbalance life stressors.

In addition to offering stress relief, holy basil is said to offer relief from respiratory discomfort, to soothe occasional fevers, to support a healthy microbial balance, and to support a healthy heart.

Holy basil blends well with eucalyptus, juniper, lemon, neroli or rosemary—and is best used with these via diffusion.

General Directions for Use:

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in a diffuser.

Internal use: Dilute one drop in at least 4 fluid ounces of liquid.

Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with a carrier oil of your choice to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Cautions: Possible skin sensitivity. Consult your physician before use, especially if pregnant, nursing, taking medication or if you have a medical condition. Avoid eyes, mucous membranes, and sensitive skin. Keep out of reach of children.

Holy basil oil uses:

  • Add one or two drops to your water or in an empty supplement capsule and consume to support a healthy microbial environment.
  • Diffuse at home or work for a stress-soothing experience.
  • To support respiratory health, diffuse throughout the day, or inhale it occasionally directly from the bottle.
  • Add a drop to your favorite recipes, including tea, for a relaxing, uplifting benefit.
  • To boost an overall sense of well-being, diffuse for 30 minutes a couple times a day.
  • For a rejuvenating iced tea experience, add two drops of holy basil to two quarts of iced tea.
